Conferences in Indonesia have very official openings and closings with moderators, microphones, banners, and plenty of pomp. I suppose this is also true for big events in the U.S. and elsewhere, but an unusual characteristic for me is the striking of a gong (or another surface) three times along with the accompanying words: "I declare this conference officially open." This action and speech delivered by the most honorable or highest ranking host allows the activity to begin.
This week, I have been at the TEFLIN Association conference and the grand opening was performed by the Rector of the home institution, Sebelas Maret University. After introductions, he struck the gong in front of the entire auditorium, letting the sound resonate three times.
I have noticed that when there is not a gong present, the official opening will involve tapping on the microphone or using a gavel to make a noise -- three times. Interestingly, I've talked to many Indonesians about the significance of three strikes and also tried to do some online research, but neither efforts resulted in much clarity.
Please do share if you know why three strikes are used in opening an event - I'd love to know. In the meantime, I will continue to search for answers.
