Day 22: Is it sew?
Today, I visited a place in Jakarta with lots of fabric and tailors. This is a quick snapshot from the third floor (I didn't want to be an obnoxious tourist and take close up pictures of the booth). Each booth is full of different sorts of thread, sewing machines, and other items a seamstress uses. Each stand had machines whirring and workers soliciting work. For less than $5 my friend had a runner finished for her table and a piece of clothing repaired. Interesting to me was that each place had several men behind the sewing machines - hemming, lining quilts, making repairs. Elsewhere, women predominate this kind of job but everywhere I observed today there were men bent over machines and projects. Perhaps my experience was an anomaly? Perhaps sewing is a man's job in Indonesia? Whether so (or sew!) or not, I have a pile of small items from my home in need of repair -- and I know just where to go!

In China, most of the tailors I saw were men also. Next time you go, can you take a look at the brand of sewing machine they are using. I am curious.
Happy to!
