Today was the National Day of Batik, and even Google celebrated.
You forgot? Wait, what is batik, you ask? This fabric originating in Java (the main island in Indonesia) is made through long processes of working with wax and dyes. Honestly, I am not crafty enough to understand the wikipedia entry in its entirety. What I do know is that it is everywhere here even on non-designated days and ranges from the quotidian to the height of elegance. Whirls of colors and patterns, batik is simply beautiful. UNESCO has designated Indonesian batik as a Masterpiece of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
I do not have much batik in my closet (yet) but I am heading to Solo, a city in Central Java that reportedly has good batik. For now, I have one beautiful swatch you can admire.
